Volunteer Specialties
People often ask us “What sort of things will I be doing when I volunteer for Land for the Homeless?”
There are a ton of different ways to use your time to help L4H! Volunteers can make an impact working directly from home, pitch in for as many or as few hours as they’d like, and use their unique skillsets and experience to contribute to the efforts of one or more teams within the charity. Below is some basic information about what the various teams working together within L4H do. If no one particular specialty interests you, or if multiple do interest you, that’s okay! We can work with you individually to ensure that you are making the best possible impact you can for our neighbors without homes while enjoying yourself in the process.

Development
L4H’s development team is solely focused on acquiring the physical and financial resources needed to help our local homeless as much as possible. Tasks that development volunteers do include directly contacting prospective donors, planning fundraising events, placing and picking up donation jars, and grantwriting.
Communications
L4H’s communications team is in charge of the marketing (messaging and promotion) of the charity. Tasks that communications volunteers do include writing content for the charity’s website and social media, responding to emails sent in by the public, creating publications and graphics that promote L4H, and contacting journalists to inform them about the charity’s work.
Client Relations
L4H’s client relations team is solely focused on working directly with the local homeless on an individualized basis to better their current situations. Client relations volunteers are patient, practical people who are not intimidated by the prospect of interacting with homeless individuals for an extended period of time. Tasks that client relations volunteers do include finding where local homeless individuals presently are, dropping supplies off to the unsheltered, and developing personalized action plans with these clients.
Research
L4H differentiates itself from other charities by continually building and maintaining a sizable database of information that can be used to help the local homeless. L4H’s research team serves as the backbone of this database which all teams within L4H rely on to be able to do their work. The ideal research volunteer is someone who is computer savvy and enjoys hunting down precise details and data while keeping in mind the “bigger picture” this information is contributing to.
Community Relations
The work of L4H’s community relations team is centered around recruiting and orienting new volunteers for our charity. Serving as ambassadors for L4H as a whole, community relations volunteers develop and maintain strong partnerships with local organizations and community leaders to enrich the talent pool L4H has access to. CR volunteers work closely with those in the development and communications teams to ensure that all parties they interact with are being effectively targeted to solicit the most participation possible.
Operations
L4H’s operations team oversees the various other teams within the charity to deliver high-quality outputs that result in meaningful change in the lives of our severely in need clients. Operations volunteers serve as organization-wide project managers and are those within L4H who are able to commit a larger than average amount of time toward advancing the charity’s mission.
